The Croatian archives marked the first time International Archives Day, June 9, 2009. The aim of the marking is to bring archives closer to the public as a valuable part of cultural heritage and to emphasize the importance of its protection and preservation.

On this occasion, the archives organize exhibitions, lectures, workshops, book promotions, professional conferences and other events to present their work and archival material to the general public.

The idea of International Archives Day developed at the beginning of the 21st century. At the XV International Archives Congress in Vienna in 2004, the initiative to mark 9 June, on the date of establishment of the International Archival Council (ICA). International Archives Day was first celebrated on 9 June 2008.
