On 26 September, a scientific conference on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the Istrian Divorce was held at the Pazin Memorial House, entitled ‘Istrian Divorce: It's a Glagolitic. It's the border. The Middle Ages.’
The meeting was organized by the Cathedral of the Chakavian Parliament for the History of Istria Pazin under the auspices of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and co-organized by the State Archives in Pazin, the Chakavian Parliament Žminj, the Archaeological Museum of Istria, the State Archives in Rijeka and the Museum of the City of Pazin.
The conference was attended by leading Croatian historians, linguists and lawyers, and through 22 presentations Istrian divorce was presented as a unique monument of identity and history of Istria.
The Istrian divorce is a historical and legal document that regulates the boundaries (‘termene and kunfine’) between the Istrian municipalities, their feudal lords and the Venetian Republic. The document was written in italic Glagolitic script for more than a century, in the period from 1275 to 1395, and was created on the basis of a compilation of older documents.
It is preserved in two transcripts – Kršan and Momjan, written by Levac Križanić. The Kršan transcript is kept at the National and University Library in Zagreb, while the Momjan transcript is kept at the State Archives in Rijeka.
The conference also displayed a special value – a transcript of Momjan's divorce from the holdings of the State Archives in Rijeka.
The organizers thank all participants, lecturers and visitors who contributed to a better understanding of one of the most valuable historical and legal documents of the Istrian past.
The scientific conference was a strong reminder of the importance of preserving the identity, language and history of Istria.
