LThe Abortion for Conservation and Restoration of the State Archives in Pazin began its work in 1974 with the aim of protecting and preserving valuable archival material.
Initially, simpler conservation and restoration interventions were carried out manually and with basic equipment, while severely damaged material and book binding was entrusted to the Croatian State Archives in Zagreb. With the development of its activities, the Laboratory has been gradually equipped and today it has modern equipment for the conservation and restoration of various types of archival material.
Thousands of sheets of written heritage are processed annually, including manuscript books, documents, cadastral sketches and plans, maps and other archival material. Conservation and restoration procedures are adapted to the type and condition of the material, the materials from which it is made and the causes of damage, while respecting its historical and cultural value.
Restoration and conservation activities include:
- review and assessment of damaged archives;
- the definition and implementation of appropriate conservation and restoration procedures;
- preservation, restoration and binding of archival and other material;
- drafting proposals for measures and studies for the protection of materials;
- management of professional conservation-restoration documentation and photo documentation;
- monitoring the conditions for keeping archives in storage facilities and proposing protection measures;
- participating in the prioritisation of conservation and restoration of materials;
- performing minor conservation-restoration procedures in the preparation of books for binding or transfer;
- cooperation with specialized conservation and restoration workshops in more complex procedures;
- monitoring the development of the profession and technological improvement of conservation and restoration procedures.
