The international scientific conference ‘Motovun Colloquium’ takes place in Motovun on Saturday 17 November at 9 a.m. for the fifth time in a row. This year, with their lectures and discussions, scientists decided to mark a series of great and round anniversaries that connect the Habsburgs and Istria. In addition to the well-known 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and the end of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, this year's gathering will also mark other somewhat forgotten but exceptional anniversaries: The 400th anniversary of the end of the Uskok War in Istria, the 200th anniversary of the Francis I cadastre in Istria, the 100th anniversary of the visit of the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Charles I to Istria and Motovun, and many others. This year's Motovun Colloquium brings together eminent civil and canonical lawyers, historians and geographers from leading faculty and scientific research institutions in Croatia and beyond. With its fifth anniversary, the Motovun Colloquium becomes a traditional legal and historical event that does not view law and history in the usual way – just as the passage of time, but rather dynamically and above all contextually and interdisciplinaryly. As the term "colloquium" indicates, in addition to lectures, this gathering stands out with its openness, discussions and conversations in which everyone is invited to participate. The organizers of Kolokvija are the State Archives in Pazin, the Croatian Canonist Society, the Istrian County, the Municipality of Motovun and the Photographers' Association Fotovun.
As always, this year the Colloquium will present a valuable collection of works from the Colloquium held in 2017, whose editors are eminent legal historians, and whose theme relates to the benevolence and role of the Church in Istria in achieving social justice during the 19th and 20th centuries. The publication of the collection reflects the beautiful tradition of publishing every year a new top scientific work on legal and historical topics related to Istria and Motovun. The book is published by the Municipality of Motovun and IKD Josip Turčinović from Pazin.
Alongside the Colloquium, a photo exhibition entitled ‘Karlo Austriani – emperor, king and blessed, in Istria’ will be opened at the ‘Five Towers’ gallery. The exhibition marks the 100th anniversary of the visit of the last Austro-Hungarian Emperor and King of Istria. Through selected photographs of the meeting of Charles I with the population, all the dramatic life in Istria during the last year of the Great War is reliably depicted. In this sense, the aim of this exhibition is not only to mark the visit of a ruler to the province of his Empire, but also to encourage reflection on the severe consequences of war that affect each individual, regardless of his status, and to draw the attention of visitors to the efforts of the Emperor and King Charles to alleviate these consequences, and to stop the war madness.
