The project Archives and Traces of Migration explores the transnational contexts of migration and diaspora through archival and archival perspectives. The project activities raise issues of evaluation, preservation, description and access to archival and documentary material that documents emigration and immigration, expatriation and diaspora communities, migration in the broader sense of the term. Preserving archival heritage on migration and researching models of documenting past and present migrations are the main theme of this project. Very often state borders are not real borders of archival heritage, people travel, and with them the records that they created or that were created about them. This project aims to explore and highlight the role of archives as a place of communication between communities, cultures and countries over different time periods. In particular, the project questions the role of archivists and other heritage professionals who, in their project activities, encounter various forms and formats of material and materials, as well as issues of dispersion of archival material, fragmentation, transnationality of heritage and communities, understanding of the needs of immigration and diaspora communities, issues of identity and affect, and challenges of how to approach existing shortcomings in preserved material.
The Ministry of Culture and Sports participates in the project as a partner: Spanish State Archives (Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte: Archivos Estatales de España), the National Archives of Hungary (Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár), the De Domijnen Foundation from the Netherlands and ICARUS Croatia as a leading partner.
Project activities start in September 2022 and end in 2025 with the international scientific and professional conference Archives and Traces of Migration in Budapest.
