Book promotion Letters from Istrian notaries, st. III, Records of Notaries of Poreč, st. II. Registers of the Notary of Poreč Antun de Teodoris (January 1449. – April 1487.) (Prir. Zoran Ladić and Marino Martinčević), will be held on January 13, 2026 at 1 pm in the hall of the HAZU Library.
The idea and basic scientific settings for the work on this project were set by dr. sc. Elvis Orbanić, former director of the State Archives in Pazin, and the project was wholeheartedly supported by the current director of the same archive Mirela Mrak Kliman, dipl. iur. Editor-in-chief of the series Files of Istrian notaries is Mirjana Matijević-Sokol. The First Book of Education Files of Istrian notaries it was printed in 2008 and consists of a transcript of the notarial documents of the Labin notary Bartholomew Gervazi (1525-1550), whose critical edition was prepared by Zoran Ladić and Elvis Orbanić. The second book of the same edition is titled Registers of notaries of Poreč Henrik de Artizanibus (1433-1434) and Antun de Teodoris (1453-1449) It contains transcripts of documents of two notaries from the first half and the middle of the 15th century. It contains a transcript of more than 140 documents and regestions made by Zoran Ladić, several facsimiles of documents and the words of persons, geographical terms and things mentioned in this notary book, made by Marino Martinčević. This book was published in 2018.
The book presented today was printed in 2025. It is a book in which transcripts of the registers of the oldest preserved notary book for the Croatian part of Istria are brought. The book was published as ST. III within the edition Files of Istrian notaries, St. II Register of the Notary of Poreč Antun de Teodoris. In the third book, a transcript of 245 different types of documents was made – sales contracts, procuration contracts, dowry and marriage contracts, apprenticeship contracts, inventory of goods and the like, and one part of the book contains the so-called. Liber Testamentorum in which 65 wills of male and female inhabitants of the Poreč commune from all social classes were recorded. The authors in the introduction highlight the great opportunities that all three books Letters from Istrian Notaries provide scientific research in various areas of medieval life in Labin and Poreč as well as throughout Istria. There is almost no problem that cannot be considered on the basis of the documents written in these three volumes – communal institutions, the role of notaries, the social order of communes, economic issues, health and medicine, ecclesiastical issues, family history, material culture, religion, urban development, migration issues and a number of other issues. The third book is written in Latin and partly in dialect. Veneto, and the authors consider the paleographic, linguistic and substantive aspects of these tax documents. The book also contains a regestion of all documents in the Croatian language and Personal names i Index of geographical names. To hope that the work on transcripts of notebook registers of the edition will be Letters from Istrian Notaries Continue until the end of the 16th century. The notary's writings provide a wealth of data and are a real treasure for the study and a more complete understanding of the medieval and early modern history of coastal and island urban and rural societies of Dalmatia, the Croatian Littoral and Istria.
