He is at an international scientific conference. Istrian economy yesterday and tomorrow Through 87 papers in the field of social sciences and humanities, a dialogue of about a hundred scientists and experts with economic policy makers, institutions, organizations and communities has been successfully realized. The announcements were grouped into six sessions.
Session ECONOMIC AND SOCIETY-POLITICAL, CRKVA, RIGHT considered the legal-economic aspects in Roman postclassical law and medieval Istria, focused on the provisions on claims in medieval statutes of Istrian towns and municipalities, but also on the influence of church structures on the economic life of Istria throughout history. Furthermore, the Austrian and Venetian policy towards forests in Istria in the sixteenth century, the institutions and economic structure in Venetian Istria, the economic and social program of the Croatian Catholic Movement in Istria, the economic aspects of the contract with Italy after the First World War, and then the importance of Zone B and the Trieste crisis were discussed. Works on the Uljanik shipyard and workers' self-management in 1950-1961, on the influence of the self-governing socialist heritage on the ownership and management structure of the market-transition economy of Istria, but also on the topic of Istrian cities as local self-governing units and their significance for the economy of Istria also found their place in the session.
INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT, ECONOMIC INFRASTRUCTURE. The participants of this session in their works started from a rich common history that continues in the modern strategy of the North Adriatic area. Regionalism, cosmopolitanism and economic globalisation were also discussed – meetings and oppositions, as well as institutional action on the economy of Istria and the wider environment in the past and today. The influence of regional development agencies on the development of the regional economy was analyzed. There was talk about the role of incubation infrastructure in encouraging the development of small and medium-sized entrepreneurship in the Republic of Croatia and the introduction of strategic planning in Istrian units of local self-government. The determinants of competitiveness of the Istrian County as development priorities and foreign capital as an opportunity for further development of the economy of the Istrian County were explored. The internationalization of Istrian companies through foundations, challenges and trends and regional cooperation of expert teams for the development of entrepreneurial learning in a pan-European network in order to strengthen economic competitiveness in the long term was presented.
LOCAL AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF JUČER AND SUTRA started from the economy of prehistoric Istria, analyzing the general assessments of the economy of Istria from antiquity, through the Middle Ages to the modern period, ending with an overview of the development of the economy of Istria from 1945 to 2012.
In the session ECONOMIC OF PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES JUČER AND SUTRA, production activities in Istria were considered through all historical periods, starting from viticulture, forestry, trade, agriculture, fisheries and maritime affairs of Istria in the 18th century, development of salt production, development of mining in the post-war period: from the symbol of success to economic reality, to finally consider the competitiveness of small and medium-sized Istrian enterprises in Europe.
The works of the session ECONOMICS OF SERVICES JUČER AND SUTRA cover communal affairs in the city of Pula, sailing Istrian ports, the development of post office, the participation of tourism in the economy of certain places of Pula, problems of water supply of Pula in the period of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, maritime affairs of Slovenian Istria in the 19th century, health tourism, tourism of Istria once and today in the context of technological progress, analysis of the development of agrotourism in the Istrian County, Istrian tourism wellness, development of tourism in the conditions of the periphery, electricity in the development of the Istrian economy, analysis of the representation of the Istrian regions on tourist portals – semiotic and sociological aspects and online sales.
The EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND CULTURE LINK session focused its research on the overview of the history of the Istrian economy according to the economic funds of the State Archives in Pazin, the State Archives in Venice and the Fund of the Republic Institute for Social Planning. Industry and workers in Istria in 1848-1918 were considered, as well as the reproduction of the working contingent as a determinant of the modern economic development of the Istrian County and the education of personnel for the needs of the Pazin economy. The activities of the Secondary Agricultural School in Poreč and agricultural higher education were considered as a support to the development of the economy of Istria. The economic collection of the Ethnographic Museum, activities of the City Library and Reading Room Pula in the service of the economy of Istria and marketing communication of the region through branding cultural and historical heritage.
It can be concluded that the development of the economy in Istria was strongly influenced by the membership of Istria in various countries and social arrangements. With the accession of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union, the economy of Istria will depend on the future regional structure of Croatia and the degree of connection of Istria with regions/associations outside Croatia. Significant issues were opened at the Conference, messages were sent, among which the recommendation was to give more attention to the quality and selected educational structure of young professionals, focus on the energy of Istria and greater connection with the wider regional environment as a prerequisite for joint appearance in third markets. Using EU funds, the initiative to launch the Multimedia Museum of the Istrian Economy was accepted and under the auspices of the Istrian County, the project will start in due course.
