The 53rd Pazin Memorial Conference was held on 2 October 2026 at the Pazin Memorial House. The event was organized by the Chakavian Parliament Cathedral for the History of Istria Pazin and the State Archives in Pazin.

This year's event focused on two topics: 150 years of Istrian railway and Central Istria in the past and present. Through seven presentations, historians, archaeologists and demographers presented new insights about the past and present of central Istria.

The first part of the meeting marked the 150th anniversary of the Istrian railway, opened in 1876. Alida Perkov spoke of Kanfanar in the process of transport transformation from 1876 to 1918. Josip Orbanić presented the efforts and activities for the opening of the railway station Žminj in 1905.

The second part of the meeting was dedicated to central Istria. Alka Starac presented new insights into central Istria on the border between Roman Italy and the province. Stipan Trogrlić drew from the life of the parish of Paz in the 19th and 20th centuries. Ivan Jeličić spoke about the memorial plaque to the Pazin volunteers in the Italian army in the First World War. Josip Šiklić analyzed the demographic dynamics of central Istria from 2011 to 2023. Branislav Ostojić presented the life and work of Anton Tone Defar, dedicated to church music.

The organizers thank all the exhibitors and visitors who, with their arrival and presentations, contributed to a better understanding of the history and present of Pazin and central Istria.

This year's Pazin Memorial confirmed that history is not only what is written in books, but that it lives in our cities, villages, people and the space that surrounds us.
