Exhibit at a glance:
‘Istria in the Great War’, i.e. Istria during the First World War, is the subject of an exhibition opened on Monday at the State Archives in Pazin on the occasion of the International Archives Day. The exhibition aims to cover the most important events in the area of Markgrofovia of Istria in the period of the Srpanjska crisis, the First World War and the beginning of the Italian occupation of the same area in the first post-war days in November 1918, the author of the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue Markus Leideck said at the opening. He added that the exhibition is divided into nine units (Introduction, Aprovization and Requalification, Humanitarian Actions and War Contributions, Evacuaries and Internships, School and Culture, Changed Everyday Life, Attacks on the Istrian Coast, then Army on the Istrian Ground, Istrian soldiers on the world battlefield and finally Fugitives, deserters, spies and propaganda). The exhibition was jointly realized by the State Archives in Pazin and the one in Rijeka, so the Rijeka part of the exhibition that opened at the same time could be viewed through the projector. Both for those Istrians who remained in Italy after the war, and for those who emigrated, and for those who came to Kastav to form the new SHS State, the legacy of the First World War bore a negative stamp, because for both countries, those who fought in the armies of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy were in fact an enemy army, DARI Director Goran Crnković said, explaining that this is why neither Croatian nor Italian historiography about Istria dealt with neither the victims of the war nor the events in society during that war. He expressed the hope that in the next four years, in which the centenary of the war will be celebrated, historians will turn to this period, in order to better and deeper understand what was happening at that time. The effort shown by the author with this exhibition was praised by Željko Bartulović, who, together with Boris Zakošek, was a reviewer, while the president of the Department of History of Istria at the Chakavian Parliament Josip Šiklić opened the exhibition with the desire to only study wars in the future and not to lead them.
