Reconstruction and upgrading of the military warehouse for archival storage

The reconstruction and upgrade of the military warehouse included the reconstruction of the existing building in which, along with the archival storage, a workshop for the conservation and restoration of paper material was arranged, and the upgrade of the northern building, which is fully used for the reception and permanent preservation of archival material. Of the projected 1,600 m² net usable area, almost 1,200 m² has archive storages with movable racks in which it is estimated that up to 9,500 required meters of archival material will be stored. Due to the lack of storage space, the State Archives in Pazin have not taken over archival material since the end of the 70s of the last century. After the completion of the contracted works, the State Archives in Pazin will begin to take over the archives of public creators from the area of Istria County, primarily judicial bodies that are the priority area of intervention of this investment.

The execution of works and the equipping are an integral part of one of the five activities contained in the investment ‘Improving the digital infrastructure and public sector services by developing the national archive information system and strengthening the national archives network’ under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which is fully funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility.

The aim of this investment is to transform the business of state archives and improve the management of documentation by public authorities, the judicial system and other creators of documentary and archival material that will ensure responsible and transparent business operations. The implementation of one of the activities will increase the storage capacities in 8 regional state archives in the Republic of Croatia for the reception of approximately 80,000 meters of required material, which will ensure adequate protection and preservation of valuable written heritage and contribute to reducing the costs of space, equipment and people at the creators of the material. The development of a national archive information system and the necessary storage capacities for digitised material, with the provision of appropriate equipment for digitisation, will enhance the capacity of material creators, primarily judicial authorities, to manage the material in digital form, which will ultimately enable greater availability of material and faster provision of services, and ensure responsible and transparent business operations.

The total value of the investment is 35,173,630,23 EUR, and is implemented by the Ministry of Culture and Media in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and Administration, the Croatian State Archives and the regional state archives and judicial bodies.

Work started in May 2023. In 2025, the technical inspection was successfully completed, the received in-service call and the handover of the facility was completed. On 20 February 2025, the Administrative Department for Municipal System, Physical Planning and Construction of the City of Pazin issued an operating permit for the reconstruction of a building (upgrading and upgrading) for economic purposes – business activities – storage of archives and restoration of materials, group 2 on the existing building plot 4718/1 k.o. Zabrežani, Bertoši, CLASS: UP/I-631-05/25-01/000001, REG.NO.: 2163-01/07/01-25-0008.
