On 11 and 12 December 2025, the State Archives in Rijeka will host an international scientific-professional conference Development of medieval and modern communes of Istria and Kvarner.

The conference is co-organised by the State Archives in Rijeka, the State Archives in Pazin, the Koper/Archivio Regionale di Capodistria Provincial Archives and the Faculty of Law in Rijeka.

The communes of Istria and Kvarner represent one of the most important forms of local self-government in history, and as such have played a key role in shaping the urban, legal and cultural identity of the entire region.

At the Conference, a total of 22 scientists and experts in 19 presentations will present the topic of communal issues in medieval and modern times, studied from various aspects: notaries, state and local administrations, brotherhoods, church history, businesses, etc.

Director of the State Archives in Pazin Mirela Mrak Kliman in co-authorship with dr. sc. Elvis Orbanić (HAZU, Institute for Historical and Social Sciences in Rijeka, PJ in Pula) will give a presentation on the topic Files of Istrian notaries.

The meeting was realized with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia.
