Istrian historical biennale (24.-26.5.2007.)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Organized by the State Archives in Pazin, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Pula and the Heritage Museum of Pore\u010d, from 24 to 26 May 2007, an international symposium of the 3rd Istrian Historical Biennale was held in Pore\u010d, with the theme <strong><em>Cerealia, oleum, vinum\u2026<\/em>: food and dining culture in the Adriatic area. <\/strong>The conference brought together about twenty scientists from Croatia, Slovenia and Italy.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Through twenty scientific papers dealing with the Istrian area, as well as the eastern-adriatic coast, new insights have come to light. The general conclusion could be summarized in the regular occurrences of hunger and the attempts of the Venetian and Austrian authorities, as well as the local population, to resist this in various ways. Jakov Jelin\u010di\u0107 tells us very picturesquely about this in his work <em>Survival in the Labin commune from the 16th to the 18th century<\/em> through the analysis of the eating habits there and the establishment of a fountain (wheat storage) to provide food also during shortages as a result of drought years. In addition to local measures, the poor inhabitants of Istria were also helped by the Istrian clergy.
